So today I dropped my first bit of cuttlebone into the tank since receiving my turtles a week and a half ago, and the good news is, that it's a success, as soon as I dropped it in there, the turtles all went for it.
What I'm asking is, the cuttlebone is drifiting along the surface of the water, and when a turtle surfaces to take a chomp out of it, it often drifts away from the turtle, since the water from the turtle snapping has moved the cuttlebone, it is kind of hard for them to get a good bite. But once they do get a good nip at it, when they chew it, they open their mouths, and I see lots of bits and shreds of cuttlebone escape back into the water, making little white bits all over the place, also dirtying the water. I'm wondering if the turtles are actually getting their good dose of cuttlebone, or is it that most of it that they chew ends up back out into the water in small particles?
This also happens with their floating sticks, they chomp the food sticks into halves, and make a mess, but they eventually scavenge the bottom and finish the leftovers.
Lastly, do most of you break off a chunk of the whole cuttlebone and slip it into the tank at times, or throw the whole thing in there? I currently break off chunks.
