Feeding and Nutrition :: Pinkies

I feed my slider a pinky once a week. She doesn't seem to be getting affected by it and loves them as a treat. She has been getting them for two yrs now, and at her last annual check-up, the vet said she was very heathy. I was just wondering what the rest of you experienced people thought about the matter?

I still haven't found any hard evidence that says I should give a pinky as a treat

RES will eat just about anything, and they will even eat carrion in the wild. It's just a little strange to me that they'd be finding dead baby mice in the water on a regular/semi-regular basis (but they would be finding worms, bugs, fish, etc.) That said, there would be some nutrition with the pinkies, and I remember reading somewhere that someone did occasionally feed them to their turtle as part of an otherwise balanced diet, but I don't remember whether it was a RES or not.

RES grow increasingly omnivorous as they get older, and plant matter becomes more important to them. It would be good to incorporate more of that into their diet.

You asked what the experianced people have to say about it. I'd trust Marisa opinion over most of the other people in the forum.

I'd suggest once a month rather than once a week. I don't plan on feeding pinkies to my res but I'll try it with my boxies when they're older.

Flutterby, I'm not saying your wrong by any means. I'm just trying to get info on the positive or negative effects. It does sound like a better idea to cut back to maybe once a month if not longer.

no its a baby mouse i hope that was a joke because i dont think they would be feeding their turt fingers every week..........
