Feeding and Nutrition :: bloodworms?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

i have a baby RES i've had for a week and he just took to food - i'm soo happy! but now i'm trying to figure out what to give him.

i've given him 3-4 pellets each day (but i learned 3 pellets once a day is probably good), and i bought him a frozen package of bloodworms. i put 8 in his feeding travel tank yesterday, and at first he didn't seem interested, but 5 minutes later they were all gone! is this good for him? i see mixed reviews on bloodworms: some say they're bad, some say they're good. i'm thinking of cutting the bloodworms down to once or twice a week, and pellets each day, plus starting some veggies like carrot and romaine lettuce as soon as i get to the grocery store.

so what's the word on the worms?

Bloodworms are a great treat and even the fussiest turtle will normally eat them. They should not be fed all the time though. Bloodworms are available at almost all pet shops in frozen cubes. Just pop a cube out and let it thaw first.

When offered as a treat only they are ok. It's best to stick mostly to a diet of pellets and leafy greens along with other veggies. Fruits, live prey, and other high protein or sugary foods should be offered one - two times a month. See the what to feed sticky for a detailed list of items.
