Went to pickup the farm share today, so more investigation into what they had available:

Endive / escarole (listed on the website as moderate usage): ratio of 1.87, also has potassium and manganese, kind of average in terms of vit A and K in relation to the others. This has a better ratio than red and green leaf, so I wonder what makes it "moderate" usage as opposed to staples like red and green leaf?

They didn't have turnip greens, but one of the farmers said that arugula is closely related. Arugula is bitter though, and in the past Sedge has turned up his nose. But anyway, the ratio is high at 3.07. Nothing else jumps out about arugula to me.

Update: Sedge was happy to eat a bit of both arugula and escarole this time :)

It's a good alternative and excellent for variety but if I recall correctly, it has a bitter taste to it.

I have been looking in my note books from the past decades on what I found , old school Haha ! Must have been in some I lost in Katrina , would of been nice to see any changes in measurement taken back then to date with different farming practices today ? I normally grow my own year round don't like all those pesticides used today gets into the plants and the taste. I believe turtles can tell the difference to. RES's have taste buds to a point but use smell mainly , the way they gulp food taste buds would not serve much of a purpose . At least I remember something like that I read in a library book. Giving my age up / library book ? Not all turtles do , like snappers don't .
Piggley "Loved" turnip greens for a long time but his taste changed over time , will not touch them today ??? Guess no matter what one find good for our friends it come down to getting them to eat it. Like us taste does change even with turtle? Back when I had my Minnie she would not eat a leaf that had any yellowish tint to it , always passed it up ?? The looks , taste what ever but she was very old and very picky !
Good work. Will help beginners getting into this hobby. I tell some they will become a dietitian having a turtle among being other specialist to have a happy and healthy turtle.

Hah easier for you to grow your own year round litefoot...I've got some latitude on you :P

Winter's coming here and local greens, grown in greenhouses, get pretty expensive, and they stop having a lot of kinds of greens, too.

The past two years the climate in spring and fall has been so crazy. Last winter total of 8 cool days had to make the most of it . Never turned my heater on once ! Last year still had summer crops going in the winter ??? This fall crop never planted , predictions are to be the warmest ever in the south. Yield be to low for all the work. The prices in stores getting pretty expensive here too. What's up with the climate , down here seems only one season Hot ?

I've been feeding Sedge escarole almost exclusively (for veggies) the past few weeks. I'll probably get some red or green leaf at the store so it's not escarole all winter, but its been working out great lately! And it keeps better than lettuce.

Piggley's not getting my escarole , sorry. That with persimmons and nuts with a touch of garlic some vinaigrette , that works great together ! It just doesn't grow well by me so store bought. Just to damp here very low yield.

Yes I know it's high in vitamin A for Piggley but since I don't eat junk food anymore it's my go to snack when I can get it fresh.
