Feeding and Nutrition :: Freeze dried crickets?

I'm new to pet turtles and was wondering if it's ok to feed a RES turtle freeze-dried crickets?

A better Treat to feed would be fresh frozen Krill. Are you feeding pellets? What kind?

Hopefully I can find some of the treats you mentioned! So far I've just been feeding Noah some Repto-min pellets and romaine lettuce. I tried feeding some shredded carrots but he didn't seem interested in those...

Red leaf lettuce is better for turtles than romain. Your not hurting them its just better.

Hate to sound stupid, but what exactly qualifies as red leaf lettuce? I not sure what to look for!

It's a leafy vegetable that is often used in salads.

Omga One pellets are much better than Reptomin. Look for it on line its cheaper that way. How is your turtle or turtles doing?

I plan on getting the Omga One pellets when I finish up the Reptomin.

Noah is doing well. I've got him some shrimp treats for Christmas. I'm still trying to figure out a way to get his basking rock closer to the light. He's pretty big so I don't think it's going to float the way it's supposed to.

How are your turtles?

The rock is on the left. It's a floating platform I bought at the pet store. He fits on it, but just barely! I hope to add the non-floating rock somehow (he's sitting on it in the photo). Just not sure how I'm going to do that yet!

I think I'm going to buy 3 or 4 pieces of small pvc pipe and glue them with aquarium sealant to the bottom. Then place the platform on top (or possibly just add a new basking platform cut to the right size). I think that will work best for the set up I have...

That amount of water is dangerous if he flips over. A cork bark wedge is what you're looking for.

Yes, I know. Right now I've got the water level at 4 inches deep. I plan to raise the water level as soon as I get the basking rock fixed.

How close should the basking light be to the rock/platform? I don't want it to be too hot.
Also, how do I keep the hard water stains from forming on the glass? How is it best cleaned?

Also, I was a little nervous about the cork bark. What if he tries to eat it?

My RES likes to bite everything, to the point where he chipped his beak. It's healed but his tank is pretty bare. He did take small bites out of the bark, but it's harmless. Very safe to have in the tank.

You need to have a thermometer to measure the temps. The distance/wattage depends on what you're using, but as a minimum, it needs to be out of reach from your turtle and any incidental water splashes.
