HI everyone,

I have a question about agar agar, a substance derived from seaweed. I recently made some jello shots (or "turtle loaf") using gelatin as a binder. My understanding is that gelatin is safe for red ear sliders and so far seems to be working. However, agar agar is of interest to me because of it's origin (plant based) and apparently contains pantothenic acid (or B5), which facilitates an animal's ability to metabolize fats, proteins, and carbs. As appealing as this sounds, I am concerned about the fact that agar agar comes from the ocean, which creates an obvious conflict with respect to the slider's fresh water environment. Does anyone have any experience using agar agar? I'm new to reptile care and basically want to provide the best I possibly can for my two turtles. Feedback, advice, or suggestions, anyone???? I will certainly appreciate any information anyone has to offer. Thanks!!!

P.S. I currently use pellets, veggies, and crickets as dietary staples. Unfortunately, both sliders are picky about their veggies, so I have opted to use the gelatin combined with pellets to disguise the veggies. It's deceptive but it works...:)

Interesting, so the agar agar replaces the gelatin?

Agar agar will set up firmer than gelatin but it is a little harder to set then gelatin. You must boil it and it will set while cooling. I'm not sure but I can only assume that it is safe for turtles because it is also safe for human consumption. It's a little harder to find than gelatin, I see it mainly in Asian and Middle Eastern groceries stores and health food stores.
