Cheerios diet...

I gave my parents a red eared slider a few years back and I've just been informed the turtle was refusing the pellets and they somehow found out it liked cheerios so they've given up all together on turtle food and have just been feeding it honey nut cheerios. I'm no expert but that doesn't sound healthy. I'm going to be baby sitting it for a few weeks so I'm thinking about attempting to transition it back onto turtle food. Any advice?

Yeah, that excess sugar may not be good for it and might turn to fat. You should be stern with him/her and give the foods you want to be eaten and if your turt doesn't eat them right away, just leave it, he/she will eat it eventually. It doesn't have to be -only- pellets(unless its a baby, baby), you could try leafy greens or even some live foods like minnows or guppies. Live foods are more enticing to a turtle though and stimulates their "hunter" instinct. Hope you can get your turt back on track :D

If he has an appetite and is "relatively" healthy, then simple stop giving it to him.

Thanks for your suggestions! I tried to feed it some romaine lettuce and the first time he ignored it, the second time he freaked out and tried to bat it away (LOL cute to watch but still...). He's still in my care and is now refusing to eat altogether (cheerios or otherwise) so I'm beginning to get concerned. He's rather fatty looking... I'll try some other greens maybe it'll help.

It's called tough love. No more cheerios. Add some greens to his tank everyday and nothing else. When he gets hungry he'll eat it. Res can go a long time with out feeding and if he's overweight maybe this is what he needs. A weight loss eat healthy boot camp.
