Feeding and Nutrition :: Cuttlebone overdose?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I always give my turtles cuttlebone on and off, but we just got more so I am trying to give it to them more frequently. I just threw a huge chunk in there and the three of them are ravenous. I've read around the forum that people always keep a chunk in there for their turtle to nibble on, but They ate this 1 inch ish cube in about 15 minutes... is it bad to have too much? I can't keep up with this rate!

Well, too much of anything is not good. I wouldn't stress it too much since they can process the calcium but I wouldn't give them an endless supply. If your turtles want to constantly eat it, then I would cut back.

My turtles sometimes do that too, but I don't think they're actually eating the entire thing. They just want to attack it and play with it so a lot of it goes to waste. I don't think you're hurting them, you might just get sick of buying cuttlebone!

If you are looking for something to entertain your turtle on a temp basis like cuttle bone toss an ice cube in. They can bite at it, attack it play with it, eat it. When they are done there is no clean up. And its a zero calorie treat :)

hahaha your babies are so cute!

I agree with Kurtni, they might just want to destroy something. I put a slice of squash in the tank and the girls just tore it up in to pieces and only actually ate a bite or two. Are they actually swallowing it after they bite it?

I might have to try the ice cube!

eh... not so much. She showed no interest and it just melted. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully you'll have a better outcome.

Sylvie got it cornered and bit at it a few times. I think she thought I had food though..she did the "gimme gimme" dance right after. Rainia was basking and looking at me like "em, my I have some privacy". I will try when the princess is done with her beauty bask lol. She is much more destructive than Sylvie
