Feeding and Nutrition :: Turtle will eat treats, but nothing else

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Apr 22, 2010 5:29 pm   Turtle will eat treats, but nothing else

A couple of weeks ago I aquired 2 1" RES. I have been buying the necessities to keep them healthy. Lighting, heater, filtration (in the mail now). I know it is kind of small, but I have them in a 4 gallon container.

I feed them in a separate container from their normal living container. Although I have tried feeding them in their home.

1 turtle will eat anything I throw at it. He has a very health apetite and loves swimming around. The other turtle will not eat regular food and does not swim as much as the other one. I have tried Nutrafin basix(came with the turtles), ReptoMin baby, fruits, veggies, a fish food, and have another turtle hatchling food coming in the mail. The 1 turtle will take a bite of these thing, yet spit them back out. Although, he will eat at any time Zoo Med Turtle Treats (Whole Krill). These he eats with gusto.

I know I shouldnt feed too much of the krill because of too much protein being bad for them. What should I do? Any recommendations?

I have been giving the 1 turtle a couple of the krills every other day so he atleast eats something, but short of the food in the mail working, I have no clue what to do.

I look forward to any and all advice.

Thanks

my turtle use to be the same way at the same age to but what was weird is he liked plants/ veggies which is a lil rare for small turtles cuz there mainly carnivores so i recommend u try giving him a lil bit or lettuce or something or even put water plants in the tank or a other thing u can try is soaking the pellets in tuna water to make it get that flavor more...have u tried feeder fish???
and btw that 4 gallon is gonna make them start fighting over dominance of the tank they need at least a 20gallon i recomend something like a 50 gallon since they do grow a lil fast

The veggies I've tried are romaine and iceberg lettuce, broccoli, and carrots. I'll go out and try some of the other suggestions from the website to see if he will eat anything. The tuna water idea sounds promising. I'll also start looking for a larger tank.

Thanks for the suggestions.

yea that tuna thing worked great know i feed my turtles this thing called fluckers buffet blend and its pellets with krill and meal worms but ballanced so not to much krill or worms mainly pellets but it leaves the flavor and smell on the pellets and my baby res love it...heres a link for what it looks like they sell at petco and i think pet smart 2 but im not sure http://www.petco.com/product/109417/Flu ... -Food.aspx
its a good deal b4 i was going to the store and paying that much for food once a month and now this buffet blend works great and it last about 2-3 months between my 2 baby res

The turtle loves red leaf lettuce. Dandelion leaves were a no go. The ZooMed hatchling food arrived and he will eat that too, but their description of how much to feed is just retarded. Havent tried the tuna water yet, but maybe I'll save that in case he stops eating again.

Thanks for the suggestions.

DONT GIVE THEM Iceberg lettuce and Brocolli. Read the sticky post of what not to give them!

I had the sam problem as you are. My Kroten will eat anything, my Kame only wanted to eat pellet, fish, shrimp, etc. What I did was a little bit cruel but it had to be done because she is getting obese and pyramiding. I put nothing but lettuce/carrot/turnip green/ipoema in her tank and I gave her nothing else. It broke my heart but it was for her own good.

A week later, she started eating the veggie...and up till today, Kame and Kroten will eat everything green

I tried the broccoli and iceberg before finding this site. I have read through the site and that is where I found the dandelion and red leaf letuce suggestions. :)
