Feeding and Nutrition :: Reptomin VS Wardley, you may be suprised

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Mon Apr 19, 2010 3:39 pm   Reptomin VS Wardley, you may be suprised

I've been using Reptomin since I've had turtles, but another brand has caught my eye. Wardley Reptile Sticks. I've compared the two and found that Wardley is more beneficial than Reptomin, and wanted to share my findings with you all.

Reptomin floating food sticks.....Wardley reptile sticks

Min. Crude Protein - 42.5%........40%
Min. Crude Fat - 8.5%................6%
Max. Crude Fiber - 2%...............5%
Max. Moisture - 8%...................10%
Min. Phosporus - 1.8%...............1%
Min. Calcium - 2%.....................2%
Min. Vitamin C - 100mg............270mg

My breakdown: I think Wardley comes out on top here.. it's got slightly less protein (too much causes pyramiding), less fat, more fiber, the same calcium as Reptomin, but 170% more vitamin C.

Ingredients... Mostly they are the same; fish meal, wheat starch, corn flour and shrimp meal makes up the majority of ingredients. However, Reptomin has artificial colors (Blue 2 Lake and Yellow 6 Lake) while Wardley has no artifical coloring ingredients. Personally, I prefer feeding my turtles food, not coloring.

For what it's worth, Reptomin is made in Germany and Wardley is made in the USA.

So, I've switched to Wardley and I think you should consider it as well.

Well there you go. Reptomin isn't coming out on top anymore I don't think.

I recently switched from Reptomin to HBH, partly because the HBH was better than half the price of Reptomin, but also because I liked the ingredients of the HBH better. It's got actual vegetables in it, where as Reptomin has just vitamins. Plus, I remember there was a thread here a little while ago saying that HBH was the only one without the preservative ethoxyquin.

My RES doesn't seem to like anything but Wardley. Or maybe it's just me thinking that way. :P

Tried a different food once, a cheaper brand (don't know if that had anything to do with it) and his tank got really dirty. I think it didn't agree with his stomach.
RES: Turtley - about 9" (She makes it a mission to measure her. :/)
Musk: Bolt - 4.5"
Mutt: Gaviota - small

has anyone tried jurassidiet from jurassipet?

http://www.jurassipet.com/Products/JurassiDiet_AT.html

i picked up some this past weekend at the oc pet fair in costa mesa. the content seems comparable to reptomin, but its small size makes hand-feeding impossible.

CaseFam, this is one of my favorite pellets. The main ingredients are top-notch and the protein content is lower than either Reptomin or Mazuri (and Wardley for that matter). I agree, however, that a drawback is the small size of the pellets (comparable to micro Zoo-Med pellets), but since I'm not interesting in handfeeding pellets, for me it's not an issue. Unfortunately, the product is getting hard to find at petstores (Petsmart sold it but apparently dropped it).

BTW, I wouldn't go by the feeding instructions on the package. Estimate a head-size amount (easy to do given the size) and give that at a feeding.

thanks marisa! what you have to say about its nutritional content aligns with what the salesman was saying, but in that sort of pet expo environment, presumably they'll say whatever it takes to sell their product. glad to see what i got is what i wanted. at this point in our turtle's lives, they are about 5 months old, we've pretty much been hand feeding them the reptomin, and with these mini-pellets, our issue is that they aren't always seen before they are swept away by our filter's current. our turtles are a lot of things, but overly observant isnt one of them, sadly.

on the subject of feeding amounts, i think every single food we've bought for our sliders has made a different, and usually dramatically different, claim on how much us enough. having come to this site, i think we have a handle on it, but i think we went through two months or so of overfeeding, as i think our little guys are suffering from some over-proteiny pyramiding. i feel horrible about it, but hopefully we wont make it any worse moving forward.

thanks again!

one slight addition, for clarification:

I use HBH for my baby RES since the pellets are smaller and the Wardley sticks are harder for him to break apart and eat. I like HBH but I can't find it in containers bigger than the smallest one.
