So I fed my Turtles a Mouse

Well, I ended up buying 2 Hopper Mice and 1 Baby Newborn mouse, I gave the newborn to my turtles and they ate it pretty quick. The 2 Hoppers were ment for my new gopher snake i caught the other day but he ended up eating one and just killing the other, I think hes still a little too small to pack away 2 mice. So I threw the dead body in the turtle tank and they ate THE WHOLE THING, feed, tail, skin, fur, ALL of it! I looked in there the next day cuz the mouse would get stuck behind rocks and stuff but it was gone and no where to be seen.

And whats funny is yesterday i was watching my turtles chase some fish and one of them took a big poop and it had all sorts of hair in it hahahaha

Eww! :P Sounds like they're not going to need any meals for a while!

Did you find they made the tank cloudy? Was the newborn pre-killed or did you feed it live?

I fed the baby Live and they killed it pretty fast, Its amazing how a 3-4 inch turtle can tear the skin rite off a mouse. I WOULD of fed the bigger mouse live but i wanted my snake to eat it more then the turtles but the snake didnt want it unfortunately.

and No I have NO cloudiness what so ever, it doesn't even look like a mouse was eaten whole in the tank. Next time i will do a live feeding and record it for ya.

This is absolutely awful!!! Are fish and pellets not enough. I know I don't have to watch, but please don't do a live feeding :(

Eh, I know alot of people think live feedings are cruel, but killing them no matter what way dont make anything about it more "Humain" too me. Do you know how they kill the feeder mice that come frozen?

Basically they put them in a big canister and freeze them to death realllly quick. Plus alot of stuff dont like to eat something already dead so live feedings are sometime the only way. And I know my turtles would eat something dead since they already have...I just like live feedings and I know alot of people out there do :P

I know how they kill them - I just don't know why people support that when there are other options? At least when they freeze them it's relatively quick and they feel little pain, as opposed to what must be the excruciating pain of having your flesh slowly picked at and torn off. In the wild animals are killed for feeding purposes all the time but animals in captivity can get the same nutrients from different foods. There are always options to pursue so we don't have to support the senseless killing of animals.

Sorry..I don't mean to preach. I just feel very strongly for issues like this. At the end of the day, everyone is different and I know there will always be people that disagree with me. With that said, when somebody brings something like this up - I make sure to make my opinion known.

Yuck. Sorry, that's my first opinion since I've kept mice as pets before.

Aside from that:

"There are various other foods that are intended for people or other animals that may be offered to turtles. While some of these items can be useful as a treat or to entice eating, they might require careful preparation and there are many things to avoid. Never feed your turtle raw meat since it is very unhealthy and a contamination risk. Processed and canned foods contain large amounts of sodium, additives and preservatives that may be unhealthy"

On the site under nutrition it says that mice are not recommended to be fed to turtles. They can be, but it's a medium to high-risk food.

Im sorry to tell you that you are WRONG pre kill"d rodents are kill"d in a gas chamber with c02 gas. They pretty much die a painful death. Please stop feeding the turtle rodents!! 1)they are not healthy & 2) you fed a wild caught rodent which is even worse.

I know it sounds gross and wrong (and probably isn't too healthy for the turtle) but it's almost the same as buying feeder fish for your turtle. I don't know why but to a lot of people killing a fish is more humane than killing a rodent. It's the same with all the meat WE eat. Aren't pigs, cows, chickens, fish, etc. bred and killed for the purpose of becoming our food? I feel there's nothing wrong with that because it sustains life. I'd rather eat that meat than some that was "produced" in a lab from chemicals and other things just because we should avoid killing animals.

It just grosses me out... I know I would never give Gimli mice, but I'm pretty sure he's eaten them before and loved them. And really, I don't think it's much different from feeding turtles feeder fish. I do feel bad for the little fishies, but they sure do make Gimli a happily fed turtle. :)

I don't support killing fish or rodents and I don't think one is better than the next. It's unnatural and inhumain. I've never fed Charlotte any of these and I never will. Charlotte gets pellets and lettuce as her main diet and fruit for snacks - she is still getting all the nutrients she needs as well as a tasty snack once in awhile which keeps her happy :)

I also agree with jwinters because i've read the list of foods which are suitable and unsuitable to feed to your turtle - mice are not recommended. If you do choose to feed your turtles this it should only be fed as a special treat. As well, just like with humans it is never a good idea to consume raw meat as this can present many other problems for your turtles.

Im sorry but what is CO2....

VERY COLD AIR! They Freeze them to death bro, I have family that run pet shops and they offer pre-killed frozen feeders and they just put them in a big tank and they have a little air nozzle that shoots a bunch of CO2 into the tank which basically freezes them really quick.

Ever play Paintball? If you have, have you ever noticed when you put the CO2 Tank on a little of the CO2 shoots out the bottom on ur hand...what does it do? it makes ur hand SUPER cold...

Also, where does it say I fed my turtle a Caught Rodent? How would i come across some baby mice in the wild? lol...

anyway, i baught the mice from a pet shop near me so no they were not wild, they were bred in a petshop.

im watchin it now but that has nothing to do with CO2, hes using dry ice. and im sure the Carbon kills them too but at the same time there basically being frozen to death.

Dry ice gives off carbon dioxide. What do you mean being frozen?

I feel like im pretty much talking to a brick wall :/
