Turtles won't always just eat the cuttlebone. Some people attach a clip to the side of their tank and hang a whole cuttlebone from it for them to munch on and replace it as it is eaten or becomes too water-logged. Others (like me) drop in pieces about head-sized a few times a week because my turtle at least eats anything and everything that goes in that tank! Female turtles can go through a cuttlebone every day or two while they are producing eggs, whereas males and small, young turtles may take weeks to go through one. They will eat it when their bodies are craving calcium.
Btw, you did remember to remove the hard backing that is on the cuttlebone, right? Otherwise, your turtle won't be able to eat it!
