Feeding and Nutrition :: Feeding Proportions

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I have been reading the posts on nutrition but I am confused on the proportions of food to be given to Freddy, my turtle. Based on my understanding of the issue, he should be given either a head-sized amount of pellets every other day, or half of that amount every day, which is what I do: I give him thirty Reptomin pellets every day. I just recently found out that the pellets weren't nutritionally complete -I had been feeding him mostly just pellets, because I thought that they were like cat or dog food, where that is all you need to give them, plus occasional treats. So now I am giving him veggies -about a lettuce leaf sized amount daily, which i estimate to be about the size of his shell. I bought some red-leaf lettuce and I am attempting to cultivate dandelions. He eats the greens alright not like its his favorite food or anything, but i guess he is hungry enough to eat them. I also give him a few shreds of shredded carrots every few days since he seems to love those (I think because of the bright orangy color). And I just bought him a guppy yesterday instead of a goldfish -which i read weren't nearly as nutritious... but the guppy was $3 more than the goldfish! so i dont know about getting him one a week.. Anyhow, sorry I was so round-about getting to the question, but I am trying to find out what the proportions of foods should be. I am now giving him about 60% greens (1 full sized leaf), 20% pellets (30 reptomin pellets), and 20% treats, like fish and carrots. Is this about right, or should I adjust the proportions?? I really want to fix his diet up since i screwed up so badly earlier with it! Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Ps he is about six inches long, shell length. I don't know his age, but i have had him for about a year and a half now

THIRTY? As in 30?! That seems like a gargantuan amount of food.

Also, look for rosie red minnows for a feeder fish. They are like 15 cents each. Make sure you dont feed too many fish though. They are very high in protien.

Read through THIS again. It might help answer your question.

Hi yeah it would be good to really cut down on the pellets. Even 15 seems quite a lot for only 6 inches. Should probably cut down a bit more. Turtles will always beg for food, so just toss some more lettuce to diminish his appetite if he seems hungry.

Also, i read that you feed 20% treats - did you mean everyday? Well if you did, treats should be fed around once a week. Fish are okay if your turtle manages to catch them but carrots and others should be fed once a week, from what i know.
I have one RES :)
