Feeding and Nutrition :: Types of Lettuces (Identify for me please)

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Sun Apr 19, 2009 3:18 am   Types of Lettuces (Identify for me please)

Hi everyone, I have small problem regards to the types of lettuce. I'm so confuse with their types of name and the looks. I know theres a lot of types and group of lettuce in the world. I can't remember who, someone in this forum said that lettuce may comes different looked and vary in other country.

This is just general info, mostly our people (Malaysian) don't call it lettuce. We call it SALAD  though salad itself have their types and categories but still we don't call it lettuce.. Yeah I know, salad suppose to be the dish of mixed vegetable maybe no need to be cooked, half cooked or just eat in chill way.

I've googled and search everything regards types of lettuce and also their names.. but still confuse and feel not satisfy with the pictures given (mostly they not said where country comes from) when it comes to compare closely with my salad. Ok, so I need you guys to take a look of my salad leaves  a.k.a lettuce that I used to feed my turtles til now.

1) Is this the ordinary green leaves lettuce aight? isn't it? I think it taste a bit bitter where sometimes I see my turtles always spit some after bites couples leaves. Makes the tank so mess :?

2) How bout this one? Is this Romaine lettuce? The most common members in this forum give to their turtle.. I just found this salad at market this 2 weeks, and it taste crunchy, small and cute :D my turtles loves it so much yet never saw they spit after bites and chomp chomp. Tank a lot cleaner.. :D

Different looks and size

So from the picture, at your first glance when you looked at it, what is no.1 and no.2 types of lettuce?

I hope you guys also can share by post your lettuces picture here to see what the different of lettuce of yours where comes from other places. It could be same name and type but with differ looks. 8)
Thank you.

Number 1 looks like green leaf lettuce, which is very good for turtles, and number 2 looks like romaine lettuce. The only thing that looks odd to me is that they look very pale, whereas the heads that I buy have some darker leaves on the outside.

Ok so far now 2 reply said the picture no.2 is Romaine Lettuce. :) how about others people answer?

TCGremlin - which lettuce that you said is pale look? The no.2 pic eh? Em I not sure about that, I got 12 pieces of Romaine lettuce which 1 bucket have 5-6 for RM2 and somes have darker leaves outside. Maybe the one in pic, the seller already pull out the darker leaves as it stale or not fresh.

Thank you for your reply~!

Azfar if you come Singapore it's called Local Lettuce over here xD .
&&. They were imported from your country too .

&&. The darker greens are fresh, they are, you should request to have it kept, since the internal is more bitter, the greener ones are not as bitter.

Pickle's favorite is red leaf lettuce which isn't up there. It looks just like the green leaf but the edges are purple-y red

If they don't like the green leaves they might like the red kind. Crush prefers red to any other lettuce.

Hey uh, what about the white stem? What is in that, like, is it nutritionally valuable, and would they be able to bite/chew it anyways?

Its kinda expensive and hard to find the red leaf lettuce here sell at my local market unless if I go to supermarket that in big shopping complex. But the price definitely expensive because its a supermarket which sell imported stock and things stuff like dat.. 8)

TheArtBook35- I don't know about the nutrient inside the white stem because my turtle won't eat it even the stem at the leaf itself. So I just cut the leaves only and throw the stem away or my turtle just leave the stem at the vegies clip.. sometimes they can be so picky~!

Have you considered ordering seeds to grow your own lettuces? It would probably be cheaper for you in the long run.

EmperorTunaFish - Thank you for your brilliant idea but I just can say NO to grow my own lettuces. Its like the seeds will say '"Oh man, I can't live or grow in this country.. so hot! my leaf will get burn soon and also... snails! what the heck they eat me! help" .. he he.. I've tried so many kind of vegies seeds but no luck. Yet my backyard got so many small2 animal who loves to eat anything except my dad's flowers.. hehe

Both look a little pale to me, but mainly the romaine here you can get more than just the hearts, which is what it looks like you mainly have.

As for the white stem part, I can't imagine a turtle liking it. I personally cut it off before I eat my salad, it's bitter, and my turtle won't eat it, so I have to tear it out of her pieces. You could certainly try, but I'd say they would prefer to gnaw on something like carrots or apples or strawberries!

Lastly, try growing dandelion leaves. They are from the weed dandelion around here, which grows just about anywhere, bad/good soil, wet/dry, hot/cool, etc.

 Yeah.... I somehow managed to not grow dandelions.

Ill just blame it on bad seeds.

I found some more today, and think that they will work much much better.

Thank you TCGremlin for the dandelion leaves idea. I'll ask my dad if he can get the weed or seeds for me.

Owh ya, I agree as you said above where the white stem got bitter taste.. I know dat even I don't chew or eat it. hihi.. My turtle won't like it too so thats why I tear the leaves only and throw the stem away. For replacement, once a week I give them carrots and apples skin for them to chew.. hoho.. loves to see the orange-y lipstick at their beak/mouth. :P
