Feeding and Nutrition :: Plant question

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Wed Feb 18, 2009 8:32 pm   Plant question

ok, this may seem like a dumb question to the more experienced here, but I have anachris in the tank for my two RES, they are appr. 5 months, we feed them pellets daily (although I just realized we are feeding them too much). My question is, do I need to add veggies above and beyond the plant, or does that take the place of veggies?

Also just tossed a couple peices of cuttlebone (I now have 3 different kinds of animals that use that!) and one went to town on it!

Thanks in advance for the replies!

You should add different veggies, remember that variety is the key to the diet.

Ok, I figured, but I wanted to check.

Another question, what's the best way to serve carrots? Little chunks, or like peels?

I feed little strips. They have a heard time breaking up larger chunks, but have no problem slicing up a thin slice. (approximately 1/16-1/8 x 1/16-1/8 x the whole carrots length).

Edit: My turtles are about 2-3" long.

For carrots, I usually use a peeler to make long thin strips. Sometimes, if I can't find the peeler, I'll cut it into matchstick sized pieces. I think they prefer the strips though.

Since we are talking veggies now, how much lettuce do you feed a day? I normally give her about 2-3 whole leaves of lettuce a day and 10 pellets every other day. Is that ok?

How big a leaf are we talking about? When I give lettuce, for big leaves, I normally give one to my adult male RES, perhaps part of another if he's really hungry.

I took a pic which I will add later today, but a normal size green leaf or red leaf lettuce. If you break it off from the bottom thats one whole leaf.
