wow, when I read backing I thought you meant the metal thing on the back, I have been considering adding cutterbone to my turtle tank. I been putting that little turtle shaped neutralizer which a few have said is useless and he eats that lol so I think he would like the cutterbone. What are the benefits of giving your turtle cuttlebone?

Cuttlebone is a very good source of calcium, which your turtle needs to keep his shell strong. It's also one of the cheapest sources of calcium out there :)

The thing is, the backing is too hard for them to digest. It can be very sharp too, so you wouldn't want it to lodged in their digestive track. From now on, I would suggest taking the backing off before you feed cuttlebone.

This was great help, the picture (since I am a visual learner lol) was an added bonus. I got a piece of cutterbone for 99 cents (in the store it said in bulk, because it was not packaged) I am using an exacto knife to get the backing off and I chose this because some of the backing was already coming off! Thanks again for the tip I am sure Tory will love it

Careful with the exato. If it were me, I'd slice my fingers to ribbons with an exacto. I need a really dull knife.

from your explaination...I presume it's okay to give them whenever they like to eat it?

Basically, yes. Any extra calcium that is not absorbed will just pass though their digestive system.

I found that if you let it soak in water for a couple minutes, the backing comes off a little easier, if that is of use to anybody :)
