He's just not used to you yet! I got my two turtles about three weeks ago, and they just started taking food from my fingers last week. Try giving him some food while he's in the water where he's more comfortable; he probably feels too vulnerable when you're holding him.

Yeah definitely not used to you. some turtles take longer than others for this kind of thing, but he'll come around eventually.
I would let him settle in right now without much handling, if handled too much, he could get stressed out and stop eating.

If your turtle is 4'' SCL then he's at least a year old. Being that you have only had your turtle for a few days, it's probably not used to you yet. My turtle, that I've had for three years, still goes in his shell when I pick him up. He comes out shortly after, but he doesn't like being held. It took him a few weeks before he would eat out of my hand. He'll only come near me in the water though.

I teach my turtles feed from my hand since they are hatchlings.. Now I have 2 turtles at 4 inch and 2 hatchlings currently 2 months age.
How do I teach them and let them know when is their meal time is by calling them with shaking the pellets container. . hoho.. shake shake and shake.. yeahh.. when they coming to me, straight away I feed them.
I think they are good listener..
Owh ya, because of they already get used to by feeding from my hand, let say if I throw some pellets or any other vegies or fruit on the water.. they don't eat it.. they ignore it... hate that.. (later on when they swim around and see the food then they will eat) they only eat what I give from my hand ONLY~!.. huhu.. just wanna share the experience..
Good luck~!
