Hello. If I am to give my lil turtle a cuttlebone in his tank is it okay if it's one of those from the pet store that is supposed to be for birds? Thanks.

Yes, but you have to chip off the hard backing found on one side. It helps to break it into a few pieces before you try.

That's the only kind of cuttlebone I know of. :D If your turtle is small, give him smaller pieces, head-size or slightly smaller. It helps if the pieces are on the thin side so your turtle can easily crunch them up.

There is also "turtle bone" sold by Zoo-Med

Image

its identical to cuttle bone but usually a dollar more..lol just helps support a Herp supplier at the same time i guess if you pick this one...
Same thing goes for breaking it apart...

I'm Not sure why someone hasnt just thrown the crumbs for bird cuttle bone into a box for turtles and other Herps that use it...
that would be perfect.. cheeper and eaiser.. i use to toss a full cuttle bone in for the 2 adults but they never ate enough of it and it just messed up the tank you would never need a full cuttle bone in the tank unless you have a ton of adult turtles i would say...
