I've got to tell ya that since I discovered this site (about 2 weeks ago) my turtle is like a little pig in...water!

Along with acting to completely upgrade her tank, I read all the lists daily and yesterday came across this string. I realized that a diet of pellets and 'can o snails' snails was not good. Sooo, I popped in basil and slices of green pepper last night. She spit out the basil upon several attemps at hand feeding it to her (I thought I had a finiky turt on my hands), then I fed her a pepper and that was it....she turned around and ate everything I had popped in the tank!

This morning I tried tomatoes and carrot and she gobbled those up too! I loved Sally, my 3 year old RES, before but my newfound knowledge is being met with eagerness and she's actually acting sweeter, like we're forming a closer bond! I'm simply thrilled and this Forum has helped tremendously.

After spending an hour or so reading posts every day for the past weeks, I've learned who seem to be the most reputable & knowledgable posters, and you sure are one of them.

I'm expecting to receive my XP3 filter and other accoutrements by Saturday, so I hope you're out there in case I hit a snag. Wish me luck!

Oh, I just thought of a question I need to ask. With all this veggie feeding, the tank has gotten murky despite my netting out uneaten food. As I mentioned above, my new canister filter will be arriving in a couple of days and I'm using a TetraFauna rock-like filter now. Will the canister filter keep the water clean with feedings or do folks feed their turts in a separate bin?

We haven't ever stuck with a schedule.
They absolutely love cooked shrimp, carrots, grapes. I haven't had much luck with greens. I keep trying different ones. They also like a little honeydew now and then. And of course they like to take down the feeder fish. I only do those every once in awhile. And they also have their pellets, but I don't think they really care for them. I have tried cooked turkey and chicken and they were kind of so-so with that. Now that I have remodeled their tank I am going to try some water plants, hopefully they will dig those. They also like figs and blueberries (on occasion).
They have never eaten out of the water. Is this usually the case? I have set out platters of fruits and vegetables when we let them run around downstairs, but they just walk over them and make a mess!

Sunday: Green/Red leaf lettuce
Monday: 16 pellets between the two turtles
Tuesday: Green/Red leaf lettuce
Wends: 16 pellets between them both, and some dried shrimp
Thurs: Green/Red leaf lettuce
Fri: 16 pellets between them both
Sat: Green/Red leaf lettuce

Every 2nd week i'll offer them a treat of sort, such as carrot or another odd vegetable other than lettuce, or fruit. And about once a month i'll give them a chunk of frozen blood worms, or a precooked thawed out shrimp each.

Also just started to feed them cuttlebone, about once a week or so I drop in 2 large chunks.

Perfectly normal - these guys need water to swallow food! Sometimes I can lure my turtles onto their basking platform to take food from me - but they will always, always goto the water to try and swallow it. Same if I leave food on their basking docks - right into the water as soon as they grab it.

I notice that there are some of you with one year or younger turtles and you feed lettuce and carrots. I feed my RES Reptomin pellets every day. I've tried bits of Romaine but not interested. I'd like to try carrots. Do you shred them?
Another question I have...do you take your RES out and feed in another tank?

I take mine into a seperate tank. My filter is worth crap.

The letuce takes time for MOST turtles. Mine ate it the second time it saw it.

I have a Fluval canister filter. Works great for my tank.
My RES diet is:
Every other day...."head" size amount of Reptomin pellets
Every day.....green and red lettuce (actually the bag says SPRING MIX) palm size amount torn in bite size pieces
My RES is quite the little beggar
He/she is a little over a year and is about 3 inches
Tomoro, I'm going to introduce little shaved pieces of carrots and see what happens

Also we got him a corkscrew plant yesterday and he shredded it in two hours. When we replaced his filter there were bits of plant in it, can that be he ate some?
