Treats (and frequency) sometimes i feed him parts of crickets that my painted turtle Hunter left uneaten (Hunter sometimes doesn't eat the heads) or left over fruits and veggies that Hunter didn't eat.
*I don't keep a strict diet, but i always feed Jakey at least kind of vegetable as a staple before i give him the pellets so that he eats the veggies (he's very picky and will almost always spit back out any veggies i give him after pellets). sometimes, i make him swim all over the tank after a pellet that i hold in my hand under water. he loves chasing it and snapping at my fingers
rarely have i been bitten and he only does this in the water like a normal turtle, so it's all good. i handle him a lot too, and i let him bask in my hand and give him a treadmill workout (he doesn't scurry in fright, but walks). by always keeping him warm while he's in my hand, he's learned to enjoy the daily handling sessions. with hunter, he eats 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 pellets everyday as he's only about 2 months old. he also eats one big cricket or two tiny crickets (gut loaded of course) when i have them (up to three weeks per month)
