I totally don't have more willpower than the turtle and would either demand that I don't even see the chocolate cake while I have a salad or just have the cake (or a little of both)
I gave my turtle semi-tough love to get her to eat veggies. She went a couple of days with only veggies that she wouldn't touch in the food bowl before I gave in and gave her a few pellets (but not nearly enough to keep her alive) and after about a week of that she started eating veggies.
