Feeding and Nutrition :: What's your turtle's favorite food?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Thu Aug 07, 2008 4:21 pm   What's your turtle's favorite food?

The only thing my little turtles are crazy about so far are pellets. (Lucky for me, I guess!) Piper will nibble at some green leafies, but the only veggie Michelangelo doesn't turn his nose up at is purple cabbage.

So I want to know what some of the more experienced eaters out there like best! What kind of treat sends your turtle splashing around in excitement?

Green leaf lettuce! I can put any other veggies in there, but as soon as the green leaf lettuce hits the water, my turtle will drop the carrot and go straight for it! It's wacky, I think. But my baby's a good little eater, he's eaten every veggie or fruit or meat I've given him; I'm blessed!

Frankie will pretty much devour anything in the tank. Her "non-favourites" are squash, zucchini, and berries. By non-favourite, I mean it takes her about 2 days to eat them, instead of the 1 hour it takes her to eat anything else.

Ralph has a sweet tooth, so he likes his fruits, and sweet potato.

Oh, and they both love tuna. The one time I gave it to them, the were both hunting around for any bits that got loose for at least half an hour...

I think I'm exceptionally lucky.
I always read about how many owners have to use the "tough-love" method and almost starve their turtles until they finally eat veggies and fruits.

Not Raphael nor Hulk, and they are still babies.
Raphael right away accepted romain lettuce, carrots, blueberries, strawberries, everything that i have offered him so far he has shown interest in haha.

Ha! that was squirt when he was smaller, he's 3.5in right now, and when I first got him at 2.7" he took right to the veggies! I just put it in there, came back in a few minutes, and it was gone! I was looking for it because I didnt think he would eat it lol

Ichigo would probably LOVE to only be on a diet of cooked shrimp, salmon, tuna, cooked carrots and sweet potatoes.

Pan-kun will eat anything and think it's great except dandelion greens! Shucks.

Hot dogs aren't nutritional at all. You shouldn't be giving them to him.

No, NO HOTDOGS! Hot dogs are bad for humans, let alone turtles. They are high in fat and salt and low in nutritional value. Also, they are high protein, which means high protein can be given as a treat once a month. Like less than a head-sized piece ONCE A MONTH. Otherwise, you will have severe and irreversible pyramiding. If you want to give a protein treat, try fish, boiled egg whites, or crickets, so much better for little growing turtles.

And @ Chrisbarnett, I had to stop feeding pellets and veggies at the same time because my turtle would stop eating the pellets for the veggies!
