I dont think any feeder fish can be guaranteed 'safe'. They're inbred, they're kept in less than ideal conditions and that's the way it is most places. You don't have to feed live food to your res but I'll get feeder fish to give my girls some exercise. If you do buy some, stay away from gold fish. Rosey red minnows or guppies are best.

What size turtles do you have? I usually buy about half a dozen rosy reds...

Lol. Mine where that big when I got my first feeder fish (small rosys), and you can trust me they won't have any problems eating them(if they are the same size I got mine anyway).

Mine were less than 1.5 inches when I first got them rosy reds, and they gobbled them up, so yours will be fine.

get rosy reds as others have said or those cheap guppies (generally no color to them)... you might find the fishies too fast for the wee lads but trust me, they always manage to gobble em up early in the wee morning when the fishies are sleeping
