Yeah, those turtles do love their shrimp.

Some people have success dipping pellets and vegetables like romaine in tuna water. Turtles like the smell.

Turtles have preferences for different types of pellets. Mine likes the Reptomin but won't eat Monster, for example. You should try a different type of pellet.

You could try some tough love. Don't give her anything but pellets and vegetables for a few days and she'll get the idea.

Shrimp should only be offered occasionally. Do like Spotsmama suggested and feed only pellets every other day and veggies every day. Your turtle will soon eat that when he doesn't get anything else. Once you've got him eating the pellets and veggies, you can introduce other foods listed in the "What to Feed Your RES" section.

You can just drop the food in, if it sinks or floats, the turt will find it when it's hungry.
The 'things stuck to it like a shadow', can you only see it when he's swimming? Like white-ish floaty things on his skin? If so, he's just shedding, all reptiles and turts shed when they are growing, so that's normal. If you think it's something else, describe it in detail, or post a clear pic so we can better evaluate it.
As for your friend's turtle, it sounds like it's very sick. I'm not an expert on it, but it sounds like it has RI (respiratory infection). There are a lot of threads in the 'Urgent Care' section. Try reading up on it and the treatments. Post the question for your friend's turtle there, and make sure you have all the info about it at the ready.
