Feeding and Nutrition

is it ok for my turtles to eat a dead feeder fish?, i have about 10 in a separate tank, and one of them died so i got curious and since they never ate a fish before i decided to go ahead and try handfeeding it to them, they went crazy for it shoving and fussing all over for it :lol:

but anyways i had some fish in theyre tank last week the fish were theyre for two weeks and they never even thought twice about eating them, i even tried separate feeding containers...still noting...

so was it a good idea to feed them a dead feeder fish?, by the way i gave it to them about 10 minutes after it died

I wouldn't, only because you don't know what it died of. When I buy my feeders, sometimes there'll be a dead one in there and I always take it out before tossing the fish in with the turts.

i would feed it anyways
because the fish humans eat are dead too

I would compare it to eating road kill or a cow that died in the field. Would you want to eat something that may have died of a disease?

lol, road kill animals didnt die from disease lol, they died from automobiles. and also, you never know what those cow factories do. maybe we do eat somewhat diseased cows.

The key word there is "live". You're right, we don't eat our fish live but we COOK it. The heat can kill most bacteria that may be in the fish. But you don't serve cooked fish to turtles.

Also, when we get fish to eat, we hope is has been freshly caught and has died due to not being able to breath out of water. However, if a fish dies IN water, that could be a sign that it was sick. I definitely wouldn't eat a fish that was dead before it was caught. And yes, there are ways to tell is a fish at the fish market is fresh or not.

lol haha, cant say i have seen a bloated ground hog before, i live in the city, so not many ground hogs pass by on the roads.
