Feeding and Nutrition :: Won't eat pellets

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

My turtle Speedy was eating her pellets just fine, until my fiance gave her one of the crickets we have for our lizard. Now she won't eat any pellets, only dead crickets. I have no idea what to do. I tried cutting her off of crickets and just giving her pellets, but she ignores them. I figured she would eat them if I keep giving them to her, seeing as how I assume she won't let herself starve if food is available, but it has been two days and so far nothing.

Keep using the tough love method, if your RES is healthy it can go several days without eating. They can go quite a while in between meals in the wild. Do not keep giving the crickets if he keeps refusing the pellets, this is just rewarding him for "bad behavior". ;)

mine wouldnt eat lettuce the first couple of days. so all i put in the feeding container was redleaf lettuce and he just got tired and started to eat it. so yea tough love is the best method.

Or try to get some of the scent of something your turtle likes on pieces of the lettuce.

Do you think it could be she doesn't like those specific pellets? Should I try another brand, or is she just being a brat?

If she was eating them fine before the crickets it could be she's being picky. You could try another brand if you want to and think it will help.

She was eating them fine until the cricket was tossed in.

I am also thinking that maybe it is because her tank is too small. Like, wayyyy to small. We rescued her when she was 6 inches, and unfortunatly only had a spare 10g tank.

I am getting a bigger home for her this weekend, so hopefully that helps as well.

You could buy another brand of pellets and rotate it with the one you already have.
