Feeding and Nutrition :: A possible feeding routine....

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I don't know what you guys might think- It's a four week (average month) long feeding routine, it starts all over again when it's done.

  • Veggies every day with Reptomin every second day.
  • Fruits every first Monday of the routine, including mango, grapes, apple, pear, strawberry, and banana.
  • Treats every Saturday, treats rotating every week. First week will be guppies and rosies, second will be crickets, third will be snails, and fourth will be bloodworms and shrimp, all with the share of Reptomin.

Or maybe I can pull out a dartboard and feed what treat the dart hits :) .

 I like the dartboard idea! I usually just think "What hasn't he had in a while, and what do I have available". ;) But that sounds good to me...

Well, the only thing I see is that you have treats planned every week when they should be more like once a month or so. And usually when you feed live prey you lower the amount of pellets so not to overdo the protein. :)

I've eliminated any kind of fish or shrimp based treats or prey. It's been awhile since they had any live or dead crickets as well. They basically get a few pellets a day and a decent amount of red leaf lettuce a day. They also get cuttlebone, carrots and tomatoes once or twice a week. Fruit only happens once or twice a month.

I'm thinking about getting snails but I'm afraid of the over population...

For what it's worth, I breed my snails too...the small pesty ones. They get snatched up right away when they are put in with the turtles. I've given up on trying to breed anything in the same tank with the turts. Not because they eat them too fast, but because they could care less about them. They can have 10 guppies in there and if I throw an 11th in, one of them will eat it in less than a minute. I also give away extras on freecycle. Other people in my area have turtles and oscars, so there is a steady demand for them if I need an outlet.

So how do I plan on giving them treats once a month without jumbling them to once every week? Reduce all the treats to all but one?

I'd vary them, and if you feed small portions, more than once a month should be OK.
