Feeding and Nutrition :: Feeding in a seperate container.

I'm thinking of starting to feed Leo in a seperate container, but I have a few questions before I get started.

First, what do you all use as a container? Do you have a smaller tank or something that is always filled with water? Or do you have a simple tupperware container that you fill with water when it's time to feed and then empty it when the turtle finishes?

Second, if you fill it at feeding time, how do you make sure the water is the same temperature as the tank so the turtle doesn't have to adjust before he eats?

Third, how do you get the turtle used to the idea? Did your turtle refuse to eat at first? I've had my turtle for about 9 months now, so I don't know if it's too late to get him started.

Finally, this kinda relates to the first question, but what size container do you use?

I use a Rubbermaid dish pan, a light-colored one so the food can be seen more easily. You don't want it really big so he can swim around in it--it's for eating only (and pooping if he does that soon after he eats). The temp should be the same as the tank water--I usually take some from the tank (and replace the tank water if necessary). I have enough water so my RES can comfortably grab the food and eat, but not it's not that deep. And the container is just for him and is rinsed and ready for the next time it's used.

I'd try feeding him something he really likes at first and give him some privacy. You have to be consistent. If he refuses, keep trying for a reasonable length of time. You have to be consistent. If he won't eat out of the tank, don't put him back in the tank and then immediately feed him---you'll just be reinforcing the idea that the tank is where he'll be fed.

When I do feed out of the tank, I do so for foods that are messy. Veggies and other plant matter I put in the tank.

Thanks for the reply marisa, I'll have to pick up a small Rubbermaid.

I have a clear one already that's about 12" L x 6" W x 6" H is this big enough for my 4.75" turtle?

Yes that should be fine. I use a smaller one for a larger turtle. I also use water from the tap thats usually a few (2 or 3) degrees warmer.

I use one the size of dish pan to let my RES move around a bit (his SCL is a little over 6 inches). I want him to eat, but he also likes to turn around and look for any food he's missed.

I upgraded to a larger tank, so I use my 20 gallon setup for feeding now. The only thing I needed for it was a heater to keep the temp. controlled. something to think about when it's time for you to upgrade.

I feed Sam in a transluscent plastic container (about the size of a loaf of bread but short)......I run water from the tap until it feels "slightly" warmer than the tank water.....I put in 4-5 Reptomin sticks, and some romaine lettuce, zuchinni, or whatever veggies I have at the time......I then leave him closed up in the bathroom for about 30-45 minutes (He likes his privacy while eating)......He eats his pellets and veggies, and does his business........Then I just drop him back in his tank and rinse the bowl.......
