Feeding and Nutrition :: Baby sleeps too much, won't eat.

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

The water and basking temps should be fine. By feel the water is several degrees warmer than Speck's temperature (which has a heater). The basking rock has a light not four inches away from it, so I'm not sure what else I can do. . . Thanks for the support.

You really need a thermometer. 4" is pretty close what watt bulb is it?

50 watt at 4" might be too hot not sure but you still need a thermo . Is it eating yet?

Only problem with a thermometer is that, like I said, the water isn't very tall, really only three inches maybe, so the thermometer may not give an accurate reading.

I had been keeping them in a bigger tank, rest assured, but because they aren't really swimming at all anyways and the temp was getting colder and harder to regulate in the larger tank I switched them to a smaller one.

No, neither are eating.

This might be way out there but is it possible the water is so cold your hibernating them?

I've definately considered this over and over again but I'm really not sure how cold it could be with a lamp directly over it for 12 hours a day! I mean it would be very possible if it was just room temperature, but this a small tank and a warm light. Again I don't think a thermometer reading would be accurate but if you wanted you could set up a small tank like mine if you have it, just a fish tank about 6"x3" and focus a 100w bulb about 4" from the water surface (which is 3" deep maximum). It feels warm enough to the touch, but if you think this is a real concern, I have a ZooMed under-the-tank heating pad in storage that I could put underneath.

Is a bobbing head a symptom of hibernation? He isn't really doing it that much, nor that frequently, but I notice it a couple times a day on the rock, his eyes closes and he twitches/bobs it back and forth.

I don't own anything that small. You really need to measure the water temp. Could also be too hot? If my calculations are correct your hatchlings have not eaten in something like 16 days. That's a really long time for a hatchlings to go without food. Can you get them a bigger container and back the light off and buy a thermometer to check water and basking temp? The water temp has got to be fluctuating a lot between when the light is on and at night when its off. I know its cold in my home not sure how warm you keep yours or where you live? As for the head shaking I don't know?

Alright, I used to own a water thermometer, I'll see if I can find it tomorrow. I don't think the water is very hot at all, it's fairly cool, but much warmer than room-temperature.

Right, I got them the last Thursday of January I think? It is an extremely long time in my nervous opinion. :/

Okay. . . the next step-up on size I have is probably about 12"x5". The only downside is it's ventilated which means the max height I can put it up to is 2" tall instead of the 3" now - which won't help the thermometer. But I can switch them out tomorrow and I'll set the lamp on a few books to give some height. Yeah, I didn't think about that until last night, the fluctuating temps between day and night, so today I pulled out my under-tank heater, and I plugged it in, though it may be so old it isn't doing much - I can't tell.

Our house is usually about 69°F. day and 67°F. night.

Have you tried the fish yet? If he can't see, then I'm afraid he won't want to eat. You can also do a 1:1 soak with some Pedialyte, perhaps leave some pellet crumbs in there when drinks the water.

Sorry for the lack of updates.

I tried to feed them both, alternating days, but neither would eat. Turtle 1, whom I named Rose, died. . . Tuesday I believe. Turtle 2, Zeke, has also passed away. Thanks for the help. Ultimately it was in vain but I appreciate it all the same.
