Feeding and Nutrition :: Ran out of pellets...

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

So I knew I was getting short on pellets, but I was waiting for them to go on sale. Short story long, I used to feed HBH pellets, because the ingredients seemed good and the price was even better. But for the longest time Petsmart (the only place in town that carries them) hasn't had them in stock. They've got a clearance label on the sticker on the shelf, which really is pointless because they put the label up after all the jars of it were gone and they haven't got any more since, and the "clearance" sticker has been up there on an empty shelf for over a year.

ANYHOW... I switched to Omega One pellets because they've got a good reputation, but it frustrates me to pay full price (totally inflated anyhow). I was waiting for one of Petsmart's 15% off coupons or something, but it never came. But I may or may not have won a $5 gift certificate for petsmart through their current 25th anniversary promotion. I figured it'd take 1-2 weeks to get here, and I thought the turtles could go that long without pellets. I usually alternate pellets one night and veggies the next. So far they've had white fish one night, a jello shot another, and the very last of the pellets another night.

But what I'm really excited about, the local market had salmon on ridiculously cheap, and I picked up a whole salmon for $3.21. I don't actually eat fish, so I picked the smallest they had. ;)
"Filleted" it and cut it up in chunks the right size for 2 turtle meals or 1 cat snack. Ended up with 16 portions this size. Figured it's probably cheaper than pet food. Especially for Kitty. .20c a portion, you can't even buy the cheapest cat food for that :P Froze it in individual portions for easy thawing + cooking as needed.

It wouldn't be so hard to get the turtles off the pellets entirely, but truth be told, I like the pellets because it's an easy meal. I hate those nights when first I have to think what I'm going to have for dinner, then figure out what to feed the turtles...

Are my pets spoiled?
Yes, but they love me

Whole reason i stick to Mazuri. So much for dirt cheap. Havent bought pellets in over a year lol. I have 3 dbts that do not eat pellets. I hate it, not gonna lie. Im definitely lazy lol. I always forget when i run out of their food to buy again like yesterday. Drive home from work tired and then get home and walk to turtles and then go, Fudge i was susposed to buy something. Thawing it then having to capture them. Watch them eat, rinse container out and put them back. Pellets its throw some in and walk away. 30 seconds worth of work lol

Hard to beat the convenience of pellets. It's easy and I think a mix of it's ingredients make it a better choice than what I would otherwise be able to provide.

Yes, that's the only thing Steve. It's hard to know that they're getting all the trace elements that they need. Pellets are supposed to have all that good stuff in them.
I've never seen Mazuri turtle pellets in my town. I've seen the koi ones though. But as I recall, the first ingredient was wheat, which to me seems like just a filler.

There's been discussion that wheat germ helps with the shedding, and a lot of people have added some koi food into their pellet rotation. Mazuri just ended a free shipping promotion, I'm not sure if they ship up to Canada though.

Yes, I've heard of people feeding koi food too. Wasn't any cheaper than turtle food though :P
Didn't know that about wheat germ. Frankie has been shedding well since she's been on Omega One, so I'm going to stick with that :)

...
At least until Petsmart decides to stop carrying that too. Then there will be nothing left in the town except Wardley
