Feeding and Nutrition :: Am I overfeeding my turtles?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Mon Aug 08, 2011 2:18 am   Am I overfeeding my turtles?

I have 2 Red Eared Sliders, one is 2 inches long and the other is 3 inches long. I think they're around a year old. Anyways, ever since I bought them half a year ago, I've been feeding them around 10 nutrafin max turtle pellets each, once a day. Am I over feeding them, under feeding them, or just right?

Also are their sizes under the average for their age?

Thanks,
Zacbuttcrack :]

The feeding guideline we follow is to give them food about equal to the size of their head.

As for your turtle's size.. it's hard to say. Turtles grow at different rates.

Also, try to feed them separately so each turtle gets their fair share. That could cause the difference in growth rate.

So we're talking about around 5 pellets for each turtle? I can't help but think thats undereating?

Does 5 pellets fit into each of your turtles heads if empty? That is about the size of the stomachs. You can supplement with all the dark leafy greens they can eat besides iceberg lettuce and spinach.

I started giving mine leafy greens in their tank with a veggie clip and now I got nasty half digested looking leafy poo all over the bottom. LOL Time for a new filter I guess.

I'd stop with the meal worms. They're very unhealthy to give, especially to smaller turtles.
