Feeding and Nutrition :: Vitamin D3 Food

Hi:

I have 4 Malaysian turtles which are herbivorous I hope. I am in India and cannot buy a uvb light for my turtles as those are not available. So I would like to know what vitamin D3 foods I should offer my turtles and how many times a week?

What kind of Malaysian turtle? If you bought it in a pet shop in India, it probably isn't Malaysian at all (like they call red ear slider Singaporee even though they are from America.) Feeding your turtle Vit D foods will help only a little, if you can't get a UV bulb try to put your turtles in direct sun for a little while everyday, even 15 minutes everyday is enough. There should be no plastic or glass partition between the turtles and the sun rays. If theyare trying to get away from the sun, they are too hot so you should remove them. Before I got my UV bulb I used to put my turtle in a tub with a little rock in the middle and some water, if he gets hot he can go into the water. But remember to keep an eye on them! Can you also put up photos so we can see what kind it is? It will also help us to understand its care.

And get a cuttle bone (you have to tell them bird calcium) and put pieces in your tank, its a good source of calcium and the turtles will eat it. You can just leave it in your tank for a long time, it will not go bad.

I am pretty sure you can order from them, though I don't know what the shipping charges would be like. In any case, I think they have UVB bulbs as well. (Not the daylight bulbs, which are different).

You should really only provide calcium if you see your turtle searching for it, such as biting at tank decor too much, or during shedding.

I'm not to familiar with your kind of turtle, but, I know other folks on this forum likely are.
