Feeding and Nutrition :: Where to buy plecos?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Where can I buy a pleco fish? I have a 4 inch turtle. I went to this pet store they had small ones for 5.00 and a 6 inch one for 15.

I was going to get the 6 in. one but I don't want it to turn into a very expensive treat.

I was thinking about getting a bunch of goldfish like 30 plus and then putting the pleco in there once I buy it. The goldfish would
distraction for Shelly while the pleco gets used to its new home. Anybody think this would work?

Also are plecos fast? Once they know they're in danger or will they just roll over and die? Any help would be appreciated. :)

Plecos can be fast, but mine doesn't try to swim away from Sheldon. He stares him down and tries to look as big as possible, I doubt his technique will work forever. Though so far he has survived, it's been about 4 months.

Shelly is gonna end up eating all those goldfish and they're really not good for RES. If you get a pleco, just take your turtle out of the tank, add the pleco and let him get used to his new home. Remember most plecos need driftwood to digest their food (or something along those lines). Get some hiding places so it has a better chance of surviving. Put your turtle back into the tank after an hour or so. Then cross your fingers and hope the pleco lives :)

vear is right about the goldfish not being good for your RES. They carry parasites and are very fatty. Skip on the goldfish and maybe consider a safer to eat fish like guppies or rosy red minnows. Just remember, ANYTHING you put in your tank is likely to be nipped at by a RES. Even if the pleco survives it may end up missing some chunks. Also, if the pleco is huge it may suck on your RES. I read a crazy story about a pleco sucking out a RES's eye. :(

Whatever you put in the turtle tank should be safe and edible. If you want the pleco for clean up consider a pack of ghost shrimp or two cory catfish.
