Feeding and Nutrition :: New way to feed calcium!!

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I've been telling myself to post this but i have been pretty busy.

Well all you lizard keepers probably know what dusting is.

Well i've been having trouble feeding cuttlebone to my res(They ate it one time)

So i thought calcium dust is 100% calcium so i started "dusting" my pellets with calcium. I was very surprise'd to see that it stuck on to the pellet even in water.

My only concern was that turtle pellets are super high in protein so whats another food my turtles cant resist.... CRICKETS!!

o yea! i started dusting my crickets with calcium i also feed my crickets a commercial cricket "gutload" food that is very high in calcium.

This is what i do.

1)put my crickets/pellets(any other feeder) in a plastic bag(ziplock works best).

2)put a couple of pinches of calcium(with or without d3)

3)shake the bag like crazy

4)take them out when they are nice and coated and feed them to my turtle.

I don't know if it good to do it everyday but i think doing this 3 times a week should be enough calcium for your turtles. When your using pellets a good trick to get the calcium to stick better is wetting them a little before you dust them.

Hope this helps anyones turtles who hate cuttlebone like mine.

Hadn't thought of dusting the pellets. And gutloading the bugs is always a good idea. What the bug eats, the turtle eats.

Yea the calcium will actually stick to the pellet for about a minute after that it will begin to disolve so this works great for turtles who are fast eaters.

Or you can put in a pellet at a time.

Great idea. I'll have to try it since Charlie is still a little skeptical about cuttlebone.

I eat canned fish and sardines, and often (especially in salmon) there are spines in the cans. I don't like to eat the bones, so I pick out the bones and let the turtles munch on them.. and they love it!
