I try to keep a few head-sized pieces floating in the tank. When I see one's gone, I replace it. My turtles eat cuttlebone as they need it---sometimes more, sometimes less.

The turtles recognize the cuttlebone as a source of minerals. They won't over-indulge. Cuttlebone is also not fattening, so I wouldn't worry about having a constant supply in the tank. I actually recommend it like marisa does.

It really depends on a few factors. My turtle has gotten 1 head sized piece a week for nearly its entire life. When I leave a few pieces in there she eats about the same amount.

Cuttlebone is simply a supplement, it shouldn't be the only source of calcium. A varied diet of pellets and vegetables should provide basic calcium.

Remember: UVB basking is necessary for digestion of calcium, otherwise it will come out just as it went in and will serve no purpose.
