Feeding and Nutrition :: vitamin A - cod liver oil

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I think my RES is vit. A deficient (see recent post in urgent care - seems to be doing better though - hasn't lost appetite which is good). Anyway, I can't find vitamins here for turtles (perhaps could find for cats/dogs though).

Should I be adding cod liver oil to their food? If so, how much/often?

Thanks!

I think you could add a little every day and see if there is any improvement.

Does he/she have swollen or puffy eyes? When mine had vitamin A deficiency her eyes were really swollen and she was always keeping them closed. If that's the case, you can put some oil on her eyes too.

I think the only problem with cod liver oil is that if you soak some if their food in it, as soon as you put it in the tank you end up with an oil slick on the surface.

I have heard of some people using cod liver oil, but I'm not sure how much or how often.

to avoid getting the mess in the tank you could feed the turtle in a different container just when ever you're using the cod liver oil

Sign of vitamin A deficiency in turtle is swollen eyes. The treatment I know of is
dabbing cod liver oil on the eyes using cotton bud. You can buy cod liver oil in any
pharmacy.

However, please be certain that the turtle is really vitamin A deficient. Otherwise,
it's rather easy to overdo vitamin A (hypervitaminosis), which is not good.

If you feed the turtle Reptomin, I believe it contains balanced vitamins already.

If your feeding turtle pellets your good on the vitamin a. In my opinion it has to much vitamin a which cause the turtles skin to shed alot.

Try a multivitamin for birds. They work pretty well for turtles also if a vitamin deficiency is what your turtle really has.
