I have also seen them used in large tank setups. They do a good job of preventing food loss and unnecessary filter clogging, while allowing you to monitor how much of the food is actually being eaten.
The down side is that they only work for floating food (typically pellets) and if the ring doesn't "free float" (think of docks that float up and down with the water level) then you may need to frequently top up the water level or adjust the ring height.
