Feeding and Nutrition :: Water Snails

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Wed Jun 04, 2008 12:44 am   Water Snails

Well, I have water snails breeding in an aquairum so when I see the water snail I put them in my turtle squarium and the turtke eats it in a couple of gulps and chews. Well, the snails arent that big, theyre pretty small .When my turtle eats the snails the snails shell peel off, at least some do. But I see her gulp down a big chunk of...skin, or shell together, will it clog her throat/stomache?

Good ? Cause I am doing the same thing my Turts love them(very tiny babies)The snails I mean lol But Tuck and Ling Ling are babies too 2inchesLg
I only give them what I get on the Anacharis plants....maybe 5 each time I buy a plant or so. Is it o.k.? My ? is what about blueberries for small Turts How often and how much? Caz they love them but I only gave them 1/2 of one a piece.

No it will not clog their throat/stomach. If you have ever squished an aquatic snail similar to the little ones you get coming in on Anacharis, the shells are pretty soft and I would imagine easily digestible.

i experimented with snails once. we have this big planted tank full of different kinds of snails and i took one of each kind and fed it to ollie. all were eaten except for the hard malaysian trumpet snail. i had to take it out of ollie's mouth because she was planning to swallow it whole.
Everything I own is on my back, and suffice it is to say I am one ton lighter and therefore 2,000 pounds happier. All houses are gone.

is it too nutricious for it though? How much is too much for one day? One month? One week? I think it just ate another one.

Same question. Can we feed the snail to turtles?? I'm wonder about it because today n juz now my turtles juz eat the snail~! aiyarkk.. for me is so gross.. chewy guwy.. hehe..

I never give my turts to eat snail cuz I'm not so sure about the snail thingy. and it happen today where I saw small snail climb my turts pool then I try to throw away the snail but suddenly ploop the snail fell into the pool and my Totto straight away eat it (it was first time Totto eat it).. I was about to 'save' the snail out from the pool.. juz couldn't make it..

It's never the best idea to let your turtles eat bugs/snails from outside, because you don't know where they've been and what they might be contaminated with.

snails are a great lean protein source, and a natural part of a RES diet. Pond snails, apple snails, and trapdoor snails are are good for the turts once in awhile. Just be sure they are from a clean pesticide/herbicide free source.
