I use the pointy end of a sharp knife and pry chunks of it off at a time.

However works for you. It's tricky little stuff. My husband did it for me by taking a paring knife and slowly working it off. We lost a good bit of it from it crumbling, but got enough. I bet the best thing would be if you had a sander or something (or if your parents do), you might be able to use a sander or some other power tool to get it off. I don't have access to any power tools though.

I've got a butterknife with a pointy end. I chip it off a piece at a time.
The butterknife is good because I can't cut myself... as easily  :P

I also do it outside, because it can make a good mess :P

I stabbed myself while doing it.

I used the blade of my swiss army knife. Pick the stuff off facing away from you and grip somewhat firmly. I haven't stabbed myself yet.

I might try my Dremel with a cutting disk in it next time to cut off the backing. See how that one goes. But that won't be for a while, I just got a brand new cuttlebone.

I've bought the turtle bones and they are cuttle bones without the backing if you would not like to peel them off.

I've bought the "Turtle Bones" before and it was just regular old cuttlebone, just like you would get for a bird (but for twice the price!) Are you sure there was no hard backing? If they've changed the product since i got it i would love to know; picking away at the hard layer is a pain!

I got them at petsmart and it was probably .50 cents more, only 2.99. I have a habbit of breaking the bone into pieces when I break the back off so the turtle ones work better for me. I'm sure, no backing. I broke the first one in half to make sure. It is just the bone and when you break it up it seems to break with less dust then the bird ones.

There is a thread on another board about the turtle bones.

There is much debate about whether or not they have a hard backing or not, But the general consensus was that they have a backing, but it is not as hard as bird cuttlebones and the turtles CAN bite through it, but it is wise to peel it off.

What happens if you don't peel off the back? I just broke a regular cuttle bone in half and threw it in Sy's tank!

The backing is like plastic, so it's probably indigestible and can cause some tummy distress.
