Is shrimp all you feed your turtle?

I have a mixed bag of Mazuri pellets, Hikari sticks, OSI spirulina pellets, Zoomed hatchling pellets, many freeze dried products like plankton, white shrimp, gammarus, and bloodworms. I would say the staple to treat is about 5:1 ratio.

I also feed them live guppies/roseys, frozen/live brine shrimp, and gutloaded/dusted crickets occasionally.

Everything I own is on my back, and suffice it is to say I am one ton lighter and therefore 2,000 pounds happier. All houses are gone.

Hopefully shrimp is not all you feed your turts.....it's not healthy in the long run (kinda like junk food & should only be given as an occasional treat).

Check in the "feeding & nutrition" section of the forum for a long list of the other foods that are more healthy than just shrimp: http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5

The pellets I have fed Sheba for 18 yrs are Reptomin. I also feed her green lettuce, collards, melon, and berries. Once in a GREAT while, I will bring her home a piece of steak or raw sushi (like when I go to the steak or sushi place, I will save her a piece of meat). She just LOVES that & always begs for more! Other times, I bring home a piece of steamed carrot, squash, or a green bean. And when she is REALLY good, I will buy a "can 'o worms" or "can 'o crickets" and feed her those canned bugs. Sheba is pretty good that way...she eats almost anything.

I feed my turtle a combo of Reptomin floating sticks and HBH turtle bites, plus veggies and occasionally a feeder fish. I thought people said (on various forums on the board) that feeding high protein isn't good in the long run.

^I use the same food above but I dont keep many healthy veggies around that are good for a RES so she gets a occasional Baby Carrot to chew on and and slice of a grape tomato once and a while. I have given her Rosie red minnows which she caught and ate all 6 within 10 minutes and sometimes dried shrimp or krill. I also have Wardleys sticks.

My biggest turt Liza has shell pyramiding from all the dried krill I fed her last year thinking it was healthy. :-( You should only feed that stuff once a month or so....and no other protein (like pellets) on days when she gets some.

Now I feed either Wardley or Reptomin pellets, koi pellets, cuttlebone, water plants (anacharis, water hyacinth & water lettuce) & the occassional freeze-dried tubiflex worm square. They have feeder fish (& crayfish in the pond) if they care to work for some protein. The little painted likes carrots, but so far none of the 5 have really eaten much of the salad items I offer.

Depends on the day of the week . . . this is for both Ru and Sara:

M/W/F: 12 - 15 Reptomin pellets, two turnip greens, green or red lettuce leaf

T/Th/Sat: Two turnip greens, lettuce leaves, carrot shreds

Sun: Poached Egg white for protein, veggies as above, apple or grape "fries" (i.e. julienned) for treat

Some days I give a few extra carrot shreds (I buy Dole Shredded Carrots)

I know some recommend feeding only every other day . . . instead, I feed smaller amounts each day. I think this alleviates the stress on them from food begging, or is it alleviating my stress and guilt from seeing them beg? Hmmmm . . .

nicole, if that's all you're feeding your turtle, s/he's on a diet of candy. The shrimp are high in protein and should only be an occasional treat.

I couldn't help but notice the price on the container...where are you located? HK?
