Feeding and Nutrition :: sera's raffy Royal good or bad?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I feed my 2 RES hatch-lings reptomin. In the tank are many guppies (fry and adults which they hunt but not get  ). Veggies... they ignore them !!! (for now i hope)

As a treat besides gammarus i bought "raffy Royal" that is a natural food and contains whole fish and shrimps . :P :P

It says that it has 57,2% crude protein 4% crude fat 3,6% crude fiber and 16,5% ash

Since the hatch-lings are more carnivorous is "raffy Royal" a good addition in their diet :?:

Thx in advance :) :)

If you are going to be giving them this, make sure that you only feed it as a treat around once every month.

The protein content (57.2%) is quite high, so I wouldn't make this food a staple in their diet. The promo blurb I read on it says it's a "tasty auxiliary food for predatory reptiles."

I would think that once a week or every other week would be fine, but don't offer any other protein (pellets) on the day that you give them the treat. Variety is great, but you have to be careful not to overdo it on the protein. Since protien is harder to get than vegetable matter in the wild they are genetically programmed to prefer it. Keep offering the veggies, try varying what you offer as well as how you offer it. My turtle wouldn't eat lettuce until i used a veggie clip to stick it to the side of the tank. With other vegetables, try shaving them into thin strips with a vegetable peeler or shredding them with a coarse cheese grater. Eventually you'll get them started and they'll grow to love their vegetables. Just don't give up on it, it's really important for their long term health and happiness.

How often you give it would also depend on the amount you're giving. You probably could feed some every week or two if you didn't overfeed.

RES do eat fish in the wild, but not as much as most people think, especially as they get older. They'd be after other live prey like insects, worms, for example, as well.
