Feeding and Nutrition :: Red Peppers

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Last night I was cooking some green and red peppers and had some extra. I diced a very small piece of fresh red pepper (sweet) and threw it in with my RES (not enough to get them sick...just in case). They went crazy for it. They were actually fighting for it. I don't plan on giving them any more, but am curious if anyone else has ever tried green or red pepper and whether an occasional treat is OK.

My res LOVE red, orange and yellow peppers! Just make sure they're sweet, not hot. I'll feed them once every couple of weeks

My turts (RES and eastern painted) love chopped-up pieces of red bell peppers. They're not as fond of green or yellow peppers, but will eat them as well. I was giving them some weekly when peppers were in season.

I tried red bell pepper 2 days ago. They wouldn't touch it. I fished the remaining slime out of the pond a day later. :(

Liza seems to prefer colored lettuces over regular green (can they even tell the difference???) which is why I tried w/ red. I'll keep trying. She still HATES her veggies.

Zucchini loves anything red, be it peppers, lettuce or pellets. She'll always eat it first.

Same with my guys. Red always gets eaten first. They must see it better.

It's so interesting - my turtle isn't one bit interested in red things. If anything, he eats green best, but I don't think color is really important to him. You know how some men are red-green color blind? Spot's a male turtle.....maybe he's got the same thing.

They do see red foods better. All turtles do as far as I know.

I give my turts red bell peppers sometimes, but I try not to do it too often, as they are pretty sugary. I reserve them for treats.
