I peel cuttlebone the same way I would peel an apple. I have a sharp hunter's folding knife and it works great because it is very sharp & sturdy. Sometimes there are some pieces of cuttle that go flying across the room so it is always good to have the vacuum handy for when you are done (or just peel it outside & sweep).

Even though Sheba doesn't like cuttle, I still keep a few pieces of it around just in case she might like to try it again.

It's also not digestible, and a worst case scenario would be if he swallowed a sharp little piece and got cut inside as it traveled through his system (or possibly impacted).

Good thing I found this thread! My turtles have had a turtle bone for a few weeks now, I'm guessing the hard backing is why they don't like it.

I took a knife today and tried to "peel" the hard backing. I think "peeling the backing" should be changed to "making lots of small calcium pieces and dust" LOL
