I'd say about 2 or 3 pellets is enough (I would personally feed 2 pellets), remember to feed him everyday, once a day.

Be sure to feed him something like a gutloaded cricket, earthworm, or feeder fish (2 cricket/fish or whatever I mentioned for him is fine) every two weeks since babys need more protein.

Offer lots of vegetables and aquatic plants too.

When my turtle was that size I fed her ~4 pellets everyday and plenty of greens. I was afraid if I didn't start feeding greens then she'd never grow to like them. Like saturday said, you can also offer other protein options a little more frequently than you would to a larger RES.

The way I based feeding with Leo was roughly trying to feed what would fit into her head and watching her shell and growth. After one year, she's just about 4 inches so she's growing right on track and I've seen no signs of pyramiding so I don't think I went overboard with the proteins.

It's normal for them to eat leftover food and poop. It doesnt mean they are hungry....Turtles dont need to eat everyday and you dont need to powerfeed them so much food. You want very slow and steady growth. A lot of pet turtles end up growing up too fast which in the long run, is bad since it will lead to health problems and shorten their life span.

Keep on feeding your turtle everyday, once a day, 3 pellets, and some vegetables, everyday, leave aquatic plants in the tank 24/7. Offer a protein treat every two weeks (I mentioned the foods above), vary the diet (add different kind of pellets if ya want too), offer cuttlebone if not use a vitamin supplement that has a lot of calcium, and you should be fine..

Of course, once he gets bigger (his head will get bigger too), you can offer him more pellets, and start offering the protein treats less often.
