I wanted to start construction of a turtle pond in my backyard but most of my friends are discouraging me saying my turts will get eaten by raccoons. Here in toronto we do have a big raccoon problem and these suckers are big and quite brave. Can a raccoon actually swim or will he drown in 2+ feet of water? I was thinking of getting some kind of wire mesh to go on top of the pond but the day i forget to close it at night theyll be gone...
well i'll tell you one thing, these suckers could definately swim. i had a pond last su mmer, didn't really think about coons cause i've never seen em here in sauga but after about a month or so of establishing the tank a gang of racoons came swimming in the pond eating over half my koi/goldfish. The only thing i can think of is having either a really really deep pond with LOTS of hiding spots or get a mesh.
I think I read someone mention using chicken wire, which is stronger. Raccoons are pretty determined critters... security would definitely have to superb.
