Habitat - Outdoor :: suitable outdoor weather conditions?

Ponds and other outdoor enclosures.

Post Posted: Sun Jul 26, 2009 4:39 pm   suitable outdoor weather conditions?

My RES has an outdoor swimming pool. It's 6' in diameter and about 15 inches deep. It's about 3/4s full and has three secure rock formations for basking on or lurking under. The pool is also partially shaded. Pierce is a little guy, a little over 4 inches now, and he just loves it.

So far I only put him in the pool if the water temp is at least 70. His indoor tub is about 75. And the temp outside has always been above 75, with some of the basking sites at the low 90s. I only put him outside when I am home, so I can check on him frequently or just sit back watch.

My question is, what are the suggested temperatures for him to be outside in? Is there a minimum and maximum temp? I live in northeastern Wisconsin, so it hasn't gotten that hot yet, chilly is a different story.

Can he be out in the rain? Obviously the wild ones are. But can a brief downpour alter the temp of the water so drastically that it can be dangerous to him?

Any advice would be appreciated. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I have yet to find any answers.

Thank you!

I've never kept mine outside so i haven't really looked into it, but here's the links to the main side regarding outside enclosures:

I hope that helps!

I've read the articles about the outdoor enclosures, but I'm looking for information about the outside temp.

I would assume that as long as the water and basking temperatures are what they should be, then it's fine.

I would think he would be fine, I'd just check the water temp after a heavy downpour. I have the same issue here with the weather, in central New York. All the lake effect showers and weird weather we've been having have really put a hamper on Ruari's outside time.

When my RES and painteds have been outdoors for the summer, they stay out in rain and thunder and lighting if it's not really violent. When it's really hot out, the rain cools off the water temp, but only somewhat.
