i have recently moved my 5 in RES outside because my dad said that the light and stuff was raising the electric too much.. he is now in a rubber maid storage bin with his plants and guppy friends..i have some wire over this and some rocks so he can come out but no light and i dont really know i he is getting enough snlight to bask in, which scares me.
we have an empty dog kennel which i would put him in but he could fit through the chainlink holes.. maybe i could put somesmaller wire over the chainlink to keep him in.. will that possibly work?? (oh yeah with water etc..) PLEASE RESPOND A.S.A.P OR I WILL HAVE TO FIND HIM A NEW HOME

Since you live in Hawaii, I'm sure if the basking dock in the rubbermaid is in direct sun for part of the day the turtle will for sure get enough sunlight. You should make sure there is some shade in the tub as well and check the water temps to make sure they are within a good range throughout the day, not too hot would probably be more your worry in Hawaii more so than too cold I imagine.
Can you post a picture of your set up so we can see and make better suggestions for you?
(You are lucky you live in Hawaii and have the option to have him live outside. I live in New York state and it's been in the single digits this week. Brrrrr)

thanks for the info... as for pictures i havent figured out how to upload and post yet... the water temp is like 73*F.. he also hasnt been eating much lately.... do you think the chain link would

Do you want to put him in the dog kennel because you could build him a habitat where he could walk on the ground as well? You should definitely be careful about larger chain link because he could get part of himself stuck or a raccoon or cat or something could come and paw or scratch at him. You could always build a low wood/plastic wall along the inside of the kennel to prevent that. I can't remember if RES dig far into the ground. Maybe someone else can come along and say whether or not you need to put fencing to a certain depth to prevent burrowing out.
In any case a picture of your current set up would really help us see what's going on.
