Post Posted: Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:11 pm   The evolution of my pond.

Ive been meaning to put pics up sooner, but ive been busy. Heres my pond so far there are a few more things i need to do, like a waterfall, and i need to get some plants for the pond. I have fixed the basking area so the turtles can get completely out of the water, there not in any of these pics, the water was too cold that day, but when i put them in and i add more things ill add more pics.

How lovely! Beautiful setting for a turtle pond. What part of the world do you live in where it's still cool in July?

Watch out that the basking platform surface isn't too abrasive and scratches your turtle's plastron. I had to cover the flagstones in my turtle's pond with cork bark because the rock was too hard and rough.

I live in Michigan, I actually put this in in may, i was saying its too cold bc the pond was just filled in these pics with hose water, the pics are also from may. Now that i have the basking area so they can climb all the way out im suprised that they have not basked yet, i have not seen them on the rock not even once, i wonder if they dont realize what it is or if they can get out, its hard to beleive they cant climb up bc they are pretty crafty when it comes to climbing. Thank you for the compliment though, if anybody has a better idea for a basking area for my pond let me know im open to suggestions, im trying to craft something new.

Possibly if the air temp is cool they just don't feel like making the effort to bask. The rule of thumb that applies in indoor setups also applies outdoors. Unless the temp on the basking platform is noticably warmer than the water, the turt probably won't get out of the water. Otherwise, it may be that they need a bit more time to get accustomed to getting out all exposed to the great out-of-doors.

Looks like a sweet setup. How you gonna keep the predators out though?
2 RES hatchlings, affectionately named "Thunder" and "Lightning". Purchased in Chinatown for $6, their habitat over $500, the satisfaction that I felt when it was all set up and my turts enjoying their new home = priceless!
