I know no one here is a fan of test strips (I'm almost out so that's good) I switched to a spray bar and I decided to test the water.. My nitrate spiked to 200+ and the Nitrite is around 10 ppm? Can that be right? I've had my cascade 1000 now for about 4 weeks now I haven't washed any of the media yet but before I went on my vacation a week ago I did a 90% water change

I’m really not very knowledgeable in water testing and this is the first tank I’ve had. But I set up my 75 gal with the cascade 1000 and have never done more than a 50% ish water change monthly. 25% ish weekly or bi-weekly and it’s not even that dirty. Water is always super clear. My turtle is only about 3inches. With my smaller tank I had him in, I was changing too much water and had a crap filter (only floss pad and black sponge) and it basically never had a chance to cycle properly.

How does the water look/smell otherwise?

The Cascade 1000 is probably a bit undersized for a 75G turtle aquarium. It's only rated at 265GPH - without any media or head. If your nitrite is still 10ppm the aquarium isn't fully cycled and that filter may not be enough to get it there.

The filter is on a 20g tank at the moment.

Do you have the media setup like in that thread? If so, let it finish cycling before you do any water changes.

Yes it’s setup like that so are you saying it’s at the start of the cycle then?
