Best placement for UVB?

I use the Penn Plax Turtle topper with a slate stone inside for basking spot. I don't have enough room over the opening of it for both the basking lamp and the uvb. Can I hang the UVB over the water and have it still be sufficient? It's in a wide mouth, painted white inside, dome fixture.

Hello and welcome

Placing the UVB over water will not be sufficient. It produces regular light and UVB rays , what you see is the white light regular rays passing through the water to the bottom. The UVB rays can only pass a few inches into the water. Hope you still have the box and or the instructions that came in the box. UVB placement is very important and must be set directly above basking area , they will not penetrate glass nor most plastic's and screen cover's block a lot to. Hopefully a good brand will also give a chart for white fixtures and polished aluminum fixtures , that makes a difference also. Should go directly above the wire cage top on the Penn Plax turtle topper at the proper distance your brand of UVB states..

Here's only an "example" of a popular one , may not be yours , only to give you an idea : http://www.redearslider.com/downloads/r ... ctions.pdf

It's not blocked by any glass, or plastic or any screen cover.

Good , some use glass covers or other like fish tanks have. The very top of the topper has wire I would place UVB above it so you can get the full benefit of it's rays. The UVA (heat) lamp could be placed at a distance and or angle you need to get 88-90* you need for the basking area. It needs to be 10* warmer than the water temp to entice basking. Any photos of your friend and setup ? Have a name? Piggley wants to say Hi.
